Scuderia Coloni Budapest Race 1 Report

Luca Filippi and Scuderia Coloni clinched a sixth place finish in the Feature Race of the Hungaroring GP2 round, after and hard fought race in which a podium finish seemed in reach for most of the time.

The key moment of the race was the start: Filippi, who was on the second spot after yesterday’s qualifying, was starting from the dirty side of the grid and this made his start far from perfect. He was passed by five rivals and closed the first lap in P7, a bad situation on a track like Hungaroring, were passing is deemed as nearly impossible.

Remaining stuck in the pack would have meant losing the race, so Scuderia Coloni did the only possible strategy, calling Luca in for an early pit-stop, to let him race for some laps on a clear track and recover some places. It worked because as soon as he was back on track Luca started pushing and posted some very fast times, including the fastest lap of the race. As the other drivers were completing their mandatory pit-stop an amazing recovery became reality, as Luca found himself in second place, behind Romain Grosjean: Luca followed him very closely and even a win seemed possible until, with just a few laps to the end of the race, his tyres started suffering too much wear. The grip got worse and worse lap after lap and Luca couldn’t hold his rivals off, ending the race with a sixth place that puts him on second row for tomorrow’s Race 2.

Similar race, even if further back in the group, for Michael Herck. The Romanian had a difficult moment at the start of the race and fell to P18, but the team adopted for him the same strategy used by Filippi, and again it worked as he was able to recover to 12th place.

Paolo Coloni: “We had the pace to win, but the start ruined our chances. Luca was starting from the dirty side and this was very hampering for him, so we did the only thing we could, calling him in on lap 12. Luca made the most of the strategy lapping really quickly, but the way how the tyres are conceived this years means that if you stop early, then you have to cope with heavy wear. Furthermore, we didn’t pass Grosjean with the pit-stop for just half a second, but that meant that Luca had to drive a big part of the race behind him, wearing his tyres even more. Anyway, we again showed that we are among the quickest, and tomorrow we will have another chance”.
