Scuderia Coloni Budapest Qualifying Report

Luca Filippi and Scuderia Coloni are getting used to first row: the only all-italian pairing of the GP2 grid clinched again 2nd place in Qualifying in Budapest, exactly as they did in Germany one week ago.

Luca and Scuderia Coloni were dominating throughout the session, and the Italian driver would have deserved pole position. He posted a 1’30”551 in the first minutes of the session and until 5 minutes to the end, no rival could get close enough to put his pole position at risk. Anyway, with just 3 minutes to go, Razia managed to be just one tenth quicker, forcing Luca to get back on track to improve his time. He was going to do that, as on the last available lap he did the record in Sector 1 and a fast time in S2, meaning that at more than half lap he was ahead of the pole time, but a yellow flag in the third sector due to a spin by Carroll in the last chicane stopped his charge. First row is anyway a very good starting point to suit the team’s ambitions, and a good first step on the way to repeat the amazing results already clinched in Nurburgring.

Also Michael Herck had a good qualifying, closing in P15 ahead of Carroll and just two tenths adrift from top ten.

Paolo Coloni: “I’m really happy that the team confirmed the same staggering competitiveness level in conditions that were very different from what we had in Nurburgring. They really worked well, from Luca to the engineers and the mechanics, and they deserve to be praised. It wasn’t an easy session because Hungaroring is a track were traffic is always an issue, and we could have clinched pole without that yellow flag in S3, but we are happy because considering how difficult overtaking can be here, first row is great anyway. We also took care of our tyres, so I just hope for a great start tomorrow, the we have the pace to win”.

Luca Filippi: “After the morning practice we did some changes and the car suited better my driving. We were really in great shape in qualifying and pole was in my reach, but on a track like Budapest first row is good anyway. Tomorrow it won’t be easy, but I’m confident because I really feel at ease with the car, and I could push easily”.
