Kevin Ceccon Silverstone Event Summary

Silverstone Circuit

Silverstone wasn't a lucky track for Ceccon. The 17 year-old driver from Italy, who was at the 4th GP2 weekend of his young career, had to cope with the typical britisj weather, learning to his cost what a big influence it can have on a race weekend.

Race 1, where Ceccon was starting 18th after a difficult qualifying, was a perfect example of that. When everybody was ready for a dry race, a strong but brief rain shower did hit the track, forcing Race Direction to opt for a delayed start under safety car. Despite such treacherous conditions, Ceccon's first laps where good, until the team decided for a risky strategy call: Scuderia Coloni called Kevin in the pits on lap 6 and, hoping that rain was going to hit the track again, fitted a set of fresh rain tyres to his car. Unluckily the weather stayed dry, and so Ceccon was back in the pits just some laps later to fit slicks. This ruined his race, dealying him to P20.

Race 2 wasn't better: Kevin was on the charge and recovering, when he reached the tail of his team-mate's car. There was a misunderstanding and when Ceccon dived to the inside of Herck, the Romanian closed the door: Kevin tried to avoid the contact, but in doing this he had an hard impact with the highest kerb of the whole circuit, and this led to a suspension failure that forced him into retirement. It was a pity because the pace showed by Kevin in both races would have been worth much better results in normal conditions.

Kevin Ceccon: "Looking at the results I can't be happy, but I have to say that from an experience point of view it was a good weekend. I drove Silverstone in all the possible conditions, I learned how the tyres behave on a wet track that is drying lap after lap, and I also had the confirmation that also in those conditions I can fight on a par with the GP2 field. Besides this, my next racing commitment is Auto GP in Donington, so maybe this experience with british weather will prove useful in some days".
