Romain Grosjean and DAMS increase their lead!
Although Romain Grosjean did not finish on the podium today, his fourth place has helped himself and DAMS increase their lead in the championship after the ninth race of the season.
I had a really great race making fourth place all the sweeter!
In the free practice session, the Grosjean-DAMS duo already showed their pace by setting the second-quickest time. In qualifying, the Frenchman was third fastest but he had to drop back ten places due to the penalty he received after the second race in Valencia. This probably helped boost his motivation and the DAMS driver made another brilliant comeback.
After a heavy shower the race began behind the safety car and things soon settled down for Grosjean. He fought his way back to the leaders pulling off several brilliant overtaking manoeuvres in the process. As the track started to dry out his wet weather tyres quickly went off and choosing the right moment to pit was of crucial importance, which the team did. When they completed the tyre change, he gained another three places and rejoined in fourth spot where he saw the flag flashing across the finishing line on Ericsson's gearbox!
In contrast, Pal Varhaug's day was not one to write home about. The Norwegian rookie was sixteenth on the grid after qualifying, and he pulled back a few places in the wet early on in the race. He lost all this advantage after his pit stop and could do no better than seventeenth.
Loďc David: General Manager: "Romain drove a fantastic race. Bravo to him for his rousing fightback, and a special mention for the team's pitstop, which helped him pull back a few more places. Overall, it's been a very positive day as we've increased our lead over our rivals."
Romain Grosjean: P4
"I had a really great race making fourth place all the sweeter! In qualifying pole was well within our grasp but I was held up on my flying lap. Today, we were on the pace to obtain a podium finish, but we didn't want to risk changing wet weather tyres for slicks too early. The most positive thing is that my main rivals all finished behind me, and this can only be good for the championship!"
Pal Varhaug: P17 "I'm not very happy with my race. It got off to a good start as I felt at home in the rain and I overtook a few rivals. But then my tyres degraded very quickly when the track dried out, and despite good work by the team during the pit stop I was unable to pull back the places I'd lost."
Next race: Tomorrow, Sunday 10th July at 10h30.
