ANOTHER PODIUM FOR CHARLES PIC, 2nd GIEDO VAN DER GARDE, 4th
GREAT RESULT FOR TEAM LEADERS, BARWA ADDAX TEAM.
Barwa Addax Team produced yet another magnificent performance from both drivers in the first of the GP2 Series races which took place today at the Hungaroring circuit. Charles Pic finished in 2nd position on the podium, while Giedo van der Garde managed a fighting 4th place, which extends the team’s lead in the championship.
There were very few incidents in the race, something unusual in this class. Charles Pic, who started from 4th on the starting grid, had the disadvantage of starting from the dirty side of the track, which on this circuit is more of a handicap than on others. Nevertheless, Charles made a great start which meant that he finished the first lap holding on to his start position. He was in the leading group of drivers until most of them came in to make their compulsory pit stop, with a minimum change of two tyres. Taking advantage of the distance he had gained over his nearest rivals, Pic came into the pits on lap 15 and came back out on track in fifth place. He started to set a quicker race rhythm and soon managed to overtake both Razia y Phillipi to finish in second position, just two seconds behind the winner of the race. Charles Pic who had been affected in qualification by traffic, showed his true worth and was the quickest driver in the last third of the race.
Giedo van der Garde drove a really gutsy race. He started from an unusually low 7th position on the grid, mainly because he was unable to get in a final attempt in the qualification session, when all his rivals were improving on their times. To make matters worse he had problems with the accelerator. Giedo as usual, made a very good start and was up to 5th position by the end of the first lap. He was in the leading group of drivers when he and the team took the risk of boxing early on lap 13 and he came back out in the middle of the peloton of drivers in 13th position. From this point he started to make a hard fought comeback. He was severely held up by a rival ahead of him who was desperately trying to fend him off on every corner even though his tyres were in a terrible state. This resulted in other drivers closing up from behind. Van der Garde managed to overtake but in doing so there was contact which caused serious damage to his front wing. It turned out that the Dutch driver was able to continue, and not only did he hold on to his position, he even managed to pull away from his immediate rivals and in the latter stages of the race he overtook another rival to finish in a fighting 4th position.
Both drivers consolidate their overall position in the championship. Giedo van der Garde lies second in the rankings and Charles Pic third. Barwa Addax Team, with both drivers in the top three, continue with their consistent run of results in this season’s championship and hold on to their solid lead in the race for the team title.
Tomorrow Sunday at 10.30 hrs local time, the second GP2 Series at the Hungaroring circuit gets under way, with Giedo van der Garde starting from 5th and Charles Pic 7th thanks to their results in today’s first race. The race will be over 28 laps covering a distance of 122.628 Kilometres.
