Fabio Onidi’s first day ever in Monaco was a very intense one: the Italian talent had to face the hard task of tackling the most prestigious and difficult track of the calendar at just his fifth event in the Series, and with no experience at all in the Monaco streets. Fabio’s day started at 12 o’ clock with the Free Practice, and he immediately did well: he closed the session in P16, improving his times lap after lap and showing the right approach. Fabio’s first impression of the track was great: “it’s really, impressive, driving so close to the armcos gives you a lot of adrenaline, you really feel that there is no room at all for a mistake. I like it, but I have to be careful, today is first of all a learning day for me”.

At 5PM the pack went on track again for Qualifying, split in two groups to ease the traffic issues typical of Monte Carlo. Fabio had just 14’ to find a good laptime and his first laps were very good, putting him into the top 3. Anyway, as the session progressed, an oversteer issued started hampering his car’s performances, and this meant that Fabio didn’t manage to improve in the last few minutes, the deciding ones for the grid position. So Fabio closed the session in P11, meaning eleventh row with this special qualifying system that GP2 is using just in Monaco.

Fabio Onidi: “Obviously I can’t be satisfied with this kind of result because I know that our potential was much better than that, we showed it in the morning. Anyway after the Practice Session we did some changes on the car hoping to make a step forward, and as a result we got some oversteer. It wasn’t a problem in the first part of Qualifying, but it got worse later, and I couldn’t do better than that.

Anyway today was a learning day for me, making no mistakes was also important and I managed that, making the most of my track time in order to learn the little secrets of this special venue. Now we have a long race tomorrow, I hope that we will be able to recover”.
