DAMS Team GP2 Series Valencia Race Report

Valencia Street Circuit

Victory and fastest lap for Romain Grosjean and DAMS!

Today, the DAMS team and its lead driver Romain Grosjean pulled off a great result in the streets of Valencia as their win has put Grosjean back in a clear lead in the drivers' title chase.

This time, Lady Luck smiled on the DAMS squad. Poleman, Charles Pic, had to start from the pits leaving the door open for Grosjean who was third on the grid. But he still had to cope with Pic's team-mate, Guido Van der Garde who was at the wheel of a very quick car. The DAMS driver drove an intelligent race combining attack with a wait-and-see approach.

Van der Garde made the mistake of trying to improve his time on the very lap when the yellow flags were hung out. The result was a drive-through penalty, which gave Grosjean a clear road to victory. This being said the two drivers were the quickest men on the track and head and shoulders above their rivals!

Grosjean set the fastest lap in the race and took the flag with 13 seconds in hand over Van der Garde, who finished second despite his penalty.

However, it was not a great Saturday for Pal Varhaug. The Norwegian was delayed on the first lap due to a crash. He set off again in nineteenth place and was then penalized for jumping the start. Despite this, he pulled back several places in the final laps and finished thirteenth.

Loic David: General Manager: "It's a magnificent result for the team after an error-free race. Everybody's done a great job and this time we benefited from a little luck to achieve this important victory. Bravo to everybody!"

Romain Grosjean: "I'm really happy with our second victory, which has been a long time coming. I was well on the pace and the team did a really good job to provide me with a competitive car. It's great that we're now back in the lead. We're not going to rest on our laurels, and we're going to continue fighting tomorrow to open up the gap in the drivers' championship."

Pal Varhaug: "I'm very disappointed. First of all, I was caught up in the chaos created by the accident on the first lap. And then for once when I started well up the grid, I was told I'd jumped the start and I had to come in for a drive-through. I'm happy of my last laps where I could overtake several cars. I'll have to pull back again places tomorrow morning."

Next race: Tomorrow, Sunday 26th June at 10h30.
