Fantastic fight back by Romain Grosjean and DAMS
The DAMS team has had a mixed weekend so far in Monaco in the most glamorous rendez-vous of the season. It started in practice and continued in the race marked by Romain Grosjean's fantastic fight back from last to fourth place. It was a good result for the Frenchman as none of his main rivals scored points.
Yesterday morning, the DAMS driver dominated free practice but qualifying in the afternoon turned into a nightmare for him. He was on a flying lap and he could not avoid his team-mate who was slowing down in the last corner before the straight. The result was a big accident, which sent both cars to the back of the grid for the race.
After yesterday's disaster, Grosjean's performance in today's race has given the team's morale a huge boost. He made a blinding start gaining six places on the first lap and then after an out-of-sync strategy and a stunning display of driving - he overtook most of the field. He saw the flag in fourth spot hot on the heels of the winner – and overtaking is said to be impossible in Monaco!
On the other hand, Pal Varhaug's nightmare continued in the race. He was caught up in the rear of the field, and the young Norwegian's first Monaco outing ended in the Rascasse guardrail at half distance.
Loļc David, General Manager:
"We experienced the full range of emotions between qualifying and the race. Bravo to the whole team, which did a great job working on strategy, as well as carrying out an excellent pit stop. Bravo also to Romain who combined aggressiveness and reflection with a faultless drive. We're a bit disappointed for Pal but he'll have learned from this race."
Romain Grosjean: p4
"It's marvellous. A thousand thanks to the team and everybody. Our plan was to stay out as long as possible before changing tyres. It worked like a dream and I really enjoyed fighting my way to the front from so far back, especially here in Monaco!"
Pal Varhaug: abandon
"After the incident in qualifying I was hoping to pull back places in the race. Overtaking is difficult here and finally I had a problem in the second-last corner. I'm very sorry for the whole team and I'll give my all tomorrow to gain some places."
Next race, Saturday 28th May
