Superb performance from Monfardini taking 6th place from 20th on the grid, Perera misses his start and loses all chance to score points today
Ferdinando Monfardini has made an impressive demonstration of his talent in today's long race in Barcelona. After the disappointing qualifying he left from the 10th row and crossed the finish line at the 6th place with 6th fastest time in race. In the first lap Ferdinando had already gained 6 positions. The lap times were similar with the leaders then the team decided to keep him on track as long as possible. Lap after lap Ferdinando progressed in the classification and took the lead of the race in lap 16. At that time, he was one of the 3 fastest cars on track. During 16 laps Monfardini kept the level very high, with consistent and fast lap times (in the 3 fastest most of the time), keeping Hamilton at a constant gap. He pitted in lap 32 and went back on track at 7th place, but with cold rear tires he could not prevent Gommendy to overtake him after he locked his front wheels in a braking area. Then Ferdinando made a safe drive to the finish and scores his first 3 points of the season.
Franck Perera missed the first 500 metres of the race. From 6th on the grid he was 21st after lap 1, there was no more chance to finish in the points and Franck took finally the 14th place.
Ferdinando Monfardini : "I am delighted with this result, all the race I was able to keep a good pace, I had a clear track, I could lead the race with a clean and fast drive, and the team did the rest of the job with a good pit stop and strategy. Taking 6th place from 20th is a great result, but we already knew we had a very good race pace since the beginning of the season, now we need to improve the results in qualifying and I think we will be able to compete for the podium soon."
Franck Perera : "I am just disappointed. I missed my start and then spent the race in the traffic. We changed our strategy but it was not enough to have any chance to get back in the top 8. It will be one more time a difficult Sunday race as I will start from today's position. Any way I am not looking backwards, I have a big motivation and we will shortly convert our pace in race results."
