A promising start, but hard work lies ahead...

The first qualifying session of the GP2 Series campaign took place today at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya -- but Telmex Arden International was unable to capitalise on a flying start. Its all-new driver pairing of Edoardo Mortara and Sergio Perez looked sharp during free practice, when they set third and seventh fastest times, but that didn't subsequently translate into out-and-out qualifying pace. They will start 11th (Perez) and 12th (Mortara) after an ultra-competitive session in which the top 14 drivers were covered by less than a second.

Perez missed the final few moments of the session -- he spun into the tyre wall at Turn Nine while making a last-minute bid to improve his time.

Sergio: "It was a shame I didn't complete that final run, because my sector times were good. I made a time-consuming error on the previous lap and was trying to make amends. On the lap when I crashed, I knew I had to push through Turn Nine and the car just got away from me. We have to be positive, however, and push forward for tomorrow's race. Our pace is good so there is definitely an opportunity to score some points. I tested here for three days in March, so I know the track well and am confident we will be strong tomorrow."

Edoardo: "Free practice was good, even though many of my laps were interrupted by yellow flags. I was third this morning, but that wasn't really representative because I expected some of the experienced drivers to be faster. The car felt good, but this is a difficult circuit and my lap times reflect as much. I ran in the top 10 for most of the qualifying session, but in the end I just slipped back a little after making a mistake on what would otherwise have been my fastest lap. If I get a good start tomorrow, though, a points finish is definitely achievable. It will be a challenge, but I'm hoping for the best so we will see what happens."
