FIGHTBACK FROM VAN DER GARDE AND BAD LUCK DOGS SERGIO PEREZ.

After the second race this morning the first GP2 event of the calendar has come to a close with both drivers of Barwa Addax Team fairing very differently. Giedo van der Garde finished in a creditable ninth position while Sergio Perez was forced to retire on the warm up lap with engine failure.

It is clear that luck has not been on the Spanish team's side throughout the whole weekend. Sergio Perez , who had been close to victory the day before, didn't even get to the end of the first straight before his engine blew, sending a great mass of smoke from the rear of his car. It's a great shame because "Checo" had shown the day before that he and the team were the most consistent in the race and nobody was able to keep up with his race rhythm. Both he and the team deserved better luck here this weekend in Barcelona but we can only hope that circumstances, such as bad luck and faulty engines, even themselves out over the course of the season.

Giedo van der Garde today made a great fightback. Starting from a lowly twentieth position on the start grid, he climbed up to ninth and was even attacking a group of four drivers ahead, who were fighting it out for the fifth place. However, this class is very competitive and it is extremely complicated overtaking on circuits like Montmelo. Giedo had pushed hard to climb through the field, which meant when he got to the last few laps his tyres were in worse condition than those of the rivals in front. Nevertheless, he deserves credit for his great effort and his never say die attitude. He set a race rhythm throughout the race which indicates that he could well be one of the challengers for the title.

To sum up, it hasn't been the best weekend for the Barwa Addax Team in terms of results but both drivers and team have done a good job. When they have had trouble free spells, they have been among the quickest drivers in the field which would indicate that the team will be there at the death fighting for honours in both driver's and team championship.

Next weekend the team will have another opportunity to show its true worth in the Principality of Monaco, at the legendary street circuit of Montecarlo.
