Carlin's Bad Luck Continues In Turkey

The Carlin GP2 team saw its bad luck in Turkey continue to today as Max Chilton was taken out of a strong position in the first race of the season this afternoon. Chilton, who qualified in 10th position, was the innocent victim in a lap one accident which caused substantial damage to his car. Chilton was the only Carlin driver in this afternoon’s race following the withdrawal of Mikhail Aleshin who fractured a metacarpal in his left hand in qualifying yesterday.

Having been fourth quickest in first practice, Chilton was quick again in qualifying but in a session that was halted by two red flags qualified 10th. With team mate Aleshin out of contention due to his injured hand, Chilton was the only Carlin car on the grid as the field lined up for the first race of the season this afternoon.

As the lights went out, Chilton made a good start, and was running alongside Geido van der Garde in the run down to the first corner. The Carlin man took the inside line around the next corner, but a concertina of events was soon to put Chilton out of contention. The accident seemed to stem from Luiz Razia who swerved back into the middle of the field having left the track, forcing the Addax cars of Charles Pic and van der Garde to swerve to avoid him. As the pack condensed, Rapax driver Fabio Leimer had no where to go and ran up the back of Chilton’s car launching himself into a barrel roll and Chilton into retirement. Both drivers were uninjured.

Speaking about his race, a reflective Chilton said, “I had the inside line, and thought I was in a good position when I was suddenly aware of two white cars heading towards me. I thought someone was going to hit me and then I felt a big impact to my rear left which must have been Fabio [Leimer]. Then I spun round and could see Fabio rolling, before my car came to a rest on the side of the track. It’s not the best start to my season, and I feel bad for the team that we’ve had such an unlucky weekend. But it’s important to look on the positives; we’ve shown consistent pace and our bad luck this weekend has been out of our control. I’m quite looking forward to a fight back through the field tomorrow!”

Race two of the weekend will take place at 11.35.
