VITALY PETROV & ROMAIN GROSJEAN WILL BE BARWA ADDAX TEAM'S DRIVERS FOR GP2 SERIES.
BARWA ADDAX TEAM, are eager to present the new team for the forthcoming GP2 Series. The two drivers who will represent the team in the 2009 season are the Russian, Vitaly Petrov and the French-Swiss driver Romain Grosjean.
The reigning champions of the GP2 Series 2008, Barwa International Campos Team, after the departure of the legendary Adrian Campos, has decided to change its name for the 2009 season. They will join the name of the main sponsor, Barwa, together with that of an antelope, the Addax, that lives in the desert and shows great speed and resistence in extreme conditions.
The Qatari sponsored Spanish team, owned by business entrepreneur Alejandro Agag, will drive under a new name but the objectives will be the same. The expectations are high after a meritorious third position in the team championship in 2007 and, of course, the marvelous team title in the GP2 Main Series won last season together with the third placing in the driver's championship. BARWA ADDAX Team is looking to equal or better these statistics for this coming season.
Barwa Addax Team will count on two of the best and most experienced drivers in the field. They will be driving with the numbers 1 and 2, testimony of their last year success. For Vitaly it will be his 3rd full season with the team. He hopes to improve on his overall seventh placing last year and give the team the same support with his points, as in the last campaign, and help the Barwa Addax Team to retain the team championship. Romain, at the age of 22 has already fulfilled his ambition of driving in Formula 1. He was the best rookie of last year finishing 4th overall only two points behind the second placed driver. He has little to improve on but the team is sure he will be up to the challenge.
Vitaly Petrov: "For me the season 2009 will be probably the most important and difficult. I'm really happy to stay one more year with Barwa Addax Team, which was my strong fortress for the last couple of years. I hope that together with my new team-mate Romain we can repeat the last season result and become the strongest Team in GP2. Personally I'm well prepared for serious work alongside Romain together with my engineers and mechanics."
Romain Grosjean: "I am very delighted to drive for Barwa Addax Team in 2009. It is an exciting challenge to be competing for the 2008 GP2 Series Champions and we have high expectations for the season to come. They have welcomed me warmly and I really feel that together we will be able to work efficiently and successfully from the get go."
Alejandro Agag: With all the success we have had up to now means that we have felt obliged to put our faith in two drivers of contrasting talents. Vitaly has been with us now three seasons and we are very happy with him. We know each other perfectly and we know that he will guarantee us important points in the overall championship and offer other great moments like his victory in Valencia and who is to say he won't be fighting for the driver's championship. There is very little to say about Romain having already reached Formula 1 status, in one of the best teams. We shall offer him a car that will give him the opportunity to demonstrate, not for the first time, his undoubted talent. We are convinced that we have done everything right to ensure that Barwa Addax Team remains at the top of the GP2 class.
"BARWA is a firm believer in promoting entrepreneurship of all kinds and is strongly supporting Romain and other key drivers and team members in Barwa Addax Team. Romain represents a new generation of achievers in the region. Just as we currently support a number of young start-ups in Qatar and across the globe, we are sharing the sentiment of sucess with this driver while supporting him in reaching his ambitious goal of becoming a leader in the Formula 1 series," said Hamad Ali Al-Athba, public relation specialist and representative of BARWA to the GP2 races.
