FAUZY TAKES IMPRESSIVE 12TH PLACE FROM THE BACK OF THE GRID, LOPEZ STRUGGLES WITH DIFFICULT CAR AND MISSES PODIUM
Barcelona , 7th May 2005 -- Everything went well for Jose-Maria Lopez until the 28th lap when he went out of the track and lost all chance to take another 2nd place in this 2005 GP2 season. After a perfect start he passed Speed and remained a few seconds behind Bruni until his pit stop. The 3 leaders had an incredible rhythm during the first 20 laps, taking the lap record one by one. After a perfect pit stop Lopez was on the way for big points and a podium finish but, with a difficult car to drive he had to push very hard to stay in the group of leaders and finally lost the rear of the car. He managed to get back on the track and take the points of the 6th place, but Jose was obviously disappointed of the result.
Eric Boullier, Managing & Technical Director : "Jose did not have the best car to race today, we have made choices that were not really adapted to these race conditions. He had to push hard and stay close to the limit at all times to stay with Bruni, the car was not comfortable and easy enough to keep a margin. This is the reason why finally he lost his position."
Fairuz Fauzy, who had no qualifying time yesterday due to electrical problem and who had left for the last position on the grid took a brilliant 12th place on the finish line. Today Fauzy has confirmed his potential and has shown what he could achieve with a reliable car. He passed 6 cars, made the 9th fastest time 4 tenths only from today's winner, and showed that with the opportunity to make a qualifying time yesterday he was a contender for points today.
Fairuz Fauzy : "After Friday's electrical failure finally today everything went well. For sure I could not hope better from 24th on the grid, I was quick and consistent even if this was a very physical race, I am very pleased to finish a race again. Tomorrow I plan to push more, it will be a sprint race so the approach is different, we work hard for this coming race and for the following events and we should target points soon."
