Bakkerud confirms plans for Euro title challenge
In the week that he prepares to travel to Indonesia for round two of the GP2 Asia series, Christian Bakkerud's programme for the main GP2 European Series which will support the European rounds of the Formula One World Championship, were confirmed when he signed a contract to drive for the Super Nova team for the 2008 GP2 Series.
Bakkerud's confirmation that he has landed one of the top seats within the GP2 series came within days of his first drive for the Norfolk, England based Super Nova team when he raced in Dubai for the team lead by Englishman David Sears. Although the Dane endured a troubled time in Dubai after being punted out of race one when well positioned and having to race from the back in round two Christian had clearly shown enough potential to warrant his selection by David Sears a renowned talent spotter.
"This is a great day for me and it vindicates the hard work which has been put in by myself and the Super Nova team in winter testing" said the happy Dane. There is mutual admiration and a belief that together we can achieve strong results and mount a sustained challenge for the GP2 main series title. David and his team have a good record at this level of motorsport and he has previously helped to develop the careers of fellow Danes Jan Magnussen and Jason Watt and I want to be the next Danish driver to reach the top levels of single-seater motorsport. Now that our future together has been settled we can concentrate on honing the car and challenging at the front of the field. I can't wait for the next race in Indonesia!"
Just home from Australia, Super Nova Team Principal David Sears remarked on Bakkerud's continued future with his team -- "We are really pleased to have finalised a deal with Christian for the GP2 series. We believe that we can really work well together to achieve better results than Christian did last season. He has recovered from his back problems and seems genuinely a lot happier than before and we are pleased he is on board for the GP2 Asia series as well which gives us all a chance for sustained improvement."
"We see Christian as a good team player and together with his new team mate, Portuguese racer Alvaro Parente, we think they will compliment each other and drive the team forward to achieve good results in the forthcoming 2008 season."
From Copenhagen, Bo Nielsen, Sports Director and Secretary General for DASU (Dansk Automobil Sports Union) commented - "We were very pleased to hear that Super Nova Racing has signed Christian Bakkerud for the 2008 season. It is great news for Christian as a driver but it is also great news for Danish motorsport in general. It is vital for DASU to have young drivers on the way up the ladder toward the ultimate goal - Formula One."
"After Christian's very difficult first season in GP2, I have witnessed how Christian has responded by raising his game. He has been and is still working tirelessly in the gym and also on his mental approach. All hard work, I am sure, will enable him to show his full potential in the forthcoming season in both the GP2 Asia series but also the main GP2 series."
"On behalf of DASU, I would like to thank the Super Nova team and Team Principal David Sears for believing in Christian. Super Nova and Danish motorsport goes a long way back and it would be great to see another Dane develop into a frontrunner under David's guidance."
