A poorly timed problem with the fuel pump in the qualifying session prevented Javi Villa from finishing better than 21st on the grid of the first 2007 GP2 series race, scheduled for tomorrow in Bahrain.
Javi was going well in free practice, always on the pace and positioning himself exactly where he wanted to be for this first race of the season, in the first half of the very competitive GP2 field. The young Spaniard finished the practice session with the 11th fastest lap, feeling that he had still room for improvement and as he was less than half a second from third place his confidence was high for qualifying..
But bad luck hit Villa a few minutes into the final 30 minutes decider for the starting grid. A problem with the fuel pump of his Dallara prevented him from defending his position and setting a good fast lap. Eventually he had to settle for 21st, a place that, given his pace both in preseason testing and in the first practice session, didn't show his true potential at all.
This poor starting position means Javi will have to fight through the pack ahead tomorrow so his team is already working on his car, looking for a steady setup so that he can run consistently on a track that's very slippery. Despite feeling down after the qualifying session problem, Villa feels confident for the race as the car was working really well today and his free practice laptimes show that he can be far higher up the field.
Javier Villa's own words:
"It has been a real shame as in the free practice we were up there with the faster guys even if we still had things we could improve. But in qualifying the fuel pump broke and that was it, at the end of the day the result has been the worse than we had in all the preseason tests. As we are starting so far back we are thinking about fitting a new gearbox and we are going for a stable setup because the track is really difficult, very slippery, and its very easy to spun ."
