Rio Haryanto denied GP2 Series points leader Stoffel Vandoorne a rare double victory at the Red Bull Ring, round eight of the GP2 Series.
Haryanto drove a brilliantly-measured race under the most intense pressure, despite a damaged car due to a mid-race collision with Artem Markelov.
From reversed-grid pole position, Nick Yelloly made a poor launch and entered Turn 1 side by side with Haryanto and Alexander Rossi. Yelloly and Rossi touched, sending Rossi into a big huge slide that he did well to catch.
Haryanto led lap one from Markelov and the fast-starting Vandoorne, who went from eighth to third. Rossi dropped to 13th, while Yelloly was forced out of the race.
Nobuharu Matsushita held fourth from Sergey Sirotkin, Mitch Evans and Pierre Gasly.
Markelov got into DRS range on Haryanto from lap six, but the Indonesian’s pace through the sweeping turns of the middle sector gave him enough of an advantage to retain his lead.
Markelov made an audacious lunge at Turn 3 on lap 14, but clipped Haryanto during the overambitious move and sailed into the gravel trap, dropping initially to sixth and then to eighth.
That put Vandoorne right on Haryanto’s tail, who suffered right-front wing damage in the contact. But Vandoorne was unable to live with Haryanto’s traction exiting Turn 2 for his crucial, DRS-aided run to Turn 3.
Harynato clung tenaciously to his lead, winning by 0.4s with Vandoorne, Matsushita and Sirotkin right in his wake. Evans finished fifth, ahead of Gasly, Jordan King and Markelov.
Rossi recovered to ninth, after passing Arthur Pic on lap 12.
Yesterday’s star Alex Lynn stalled at the start and finished 21st with fastest lap. Having almost been lapped on the opening tour, he pulled well clear of the leaders in a case of what might have been.
