Trident Racing experiences positive 2011 debut at Abu Dhabi
Trident Racing completed the first two days of GP2 Series testing today at Abu Dhabi. On the Yas Marina Circuit, the 2011 season had its first official kick-off session, with the Italian squad lining-up with drivers Stefano Coletti and Rodolfo Gonzalez, who will be entering both the GP2 Main Series and Asia Series.
The first outing of the season was made tough by the strong wind and by the following presence of lots of sand on-track. Due to the inclement weather conditions, the Day 1 featured several delays, while day 2 got off to a late start because of thick fog and reduced visibility. The closure provided some more incidents, as an off-track exit and the relative debris forced track stewards to call it quits earlier.
Despite all the external factors, Trident Racing was able to collect an extremely positive feedback, as the team completed all the work scheduled with Stefano and Rodolfo. The squad's early-season program is set to continue next week, as two more days of free testing will be followed by the 2011 GP2 Asia Series season opener between February 10 and 12. The technical staff and drivers of Trident Racing wish to congratulate the GP2 staff, as well as Dallara and Pirelli, for the high-quality overall package lined-up for the season. Both drivers had some really favorable comments, and showed a good feel with the new racecar.
"I'm really satisfied with the huge amount of work we carried on and with the progress showed in the first days of testing. We put together some good technical solutions and displayed a great race pace, while once in full qualifying trim a punctired tire and the early end of the Day 2 prevented me from expressing my full single-lap power. I definitely feel that we have some great potential here at Trident Racing, and that we could well end up battling for the top. I'm also really proud of the fact that all the team trust me 100%. Another great thing is the positive relationship with my team-mate. I think we'll become a true added-value for the team."
"I'm quite satisfied with these first two days of testing, which were oriented on getting in-touch with the new racecar. This morning I worked on some set-up solutions that didn't prove effective, unlike in the afternoon, when we managed to reach a setting that provided good performance and an handling that pretty much matched my driving style. We weren't lucky at all in the closing stages, when I couldn't use my set of new tires due to the session's early ending. I'm sure I would've had chances to end up at the top like happened on Day 1. Now we have some time to work on the data we collected and get ready for next week's session. I want to share a word on my team-mate Gonzalez too: he's an extremely prepared and friendly person."
Luca Zerbini, Managing Director
"The first and complete contact with the new car proved we're on the good path in terms of development, which was started by our technicians in the past few months. Of course, there's still a lot of work to do, and there will be more test to run, but we're quite confident. We got the feeling that our work started in the right direction since the beginning, and at the end of the day both Stefano and Rodolfo proved they'll be able to battle for the higher zone of the charts. All the team's staff is extremely motivated, upbeat and willing to challenge all over a long and demanding season."
