Successful GP2 Asia weekend for Vitaly Petrov in Malaysia
Third round of GP2 Asia championship in Malaysia was very successful for Russian Vitaly Petrov. In an action-packed feature race Barwa International Campos Team driver claimed his first GP2 Asia victory and took third place in Sunday's sprint.
Petrov began the first race, in extreme wet conditions at Sepang International Circuit, from 17th position and completed a faultless race where many others failed. It's his second win in GP2 races after his last year success in Valencia.
In sprint race Petrov started from eight position and after another brilliant start and long battle with championship leader Romain Grosjean finished third. After third round of the championship Vitaly is in second place in the championship 11 points behind the current leader Grosjean.
Vitaly Petrov: "I had a great weekend here in Malaysia if we forget about qualifications. Honestly, feature race was hardest in my career! I made a start good enough to come out of the first lap in 6th place. At the restart, under the rain, it was tricky to stay on track. But I worked my way to the top corner after corner. It was fantastic to take this win. In Sunday's sprint race my start also was good. Then I tried my best to contain Grosjean, but I made a small mistake and he took this opportunity to pass me. After that, he was faster than me. With one win and another podium this weekend, I'm now second in the championship. Fauzy is very close, Grosjean is not too far. The end of the championship should be very interesting! I hope that in Bahrain we will be strong"
The next event is in 2 weeks' time in Bahrain.
