Bitten but not by a snake

At a race track where the drivers were warned pre-race not to stray from their car in the event of going off circuit for fear of snake bites, Christian Bakkerud's GP2 race ended at the third corner when he was "bitten" by the Brazilian racer Bruno Senna which ended his race.

With minimal time to acclimatise on a circuit which Christian had not previously experienced, the Dane was delighted to qualify in 5th position and he was looking forward to a strong race and eyeing a real opportunity for his first GP2 podium finish.

Christian takes up the story -- "I was really pleased with my qualifying and made a decent start and held my position into the first corner and was already thinking in terms of attacking the cars in front when bang I got hit from behind by Bruno Senna which turned me around causing one of the other GP2 cars to fly across me resulting in mayor damage to my car. My mechanics are now working hard on repairing the car for tomorrow's sprint race."

"Obviously I'm massively disappointed because we qualified really well and I'm feeling really confident in the Super Nova car and I also sensed a podium was a real possibility in today's feature race."

Today's result means that Christian will begin tomorrow's 31 lap sprint race from the back of the grid which starts at 13:00 hrs local time.
