The second of the two days testing prior to the inaugural round of the newly born GP2 Asia series resumed on Sunday under bright sunshine at Dubai for the 26 cars present.
The newly appointed Qi-Meritus.Mahara drivers, Luca Filippi and Hiroki Yoshimoto continued working on the team's preparations for the upcoming season and went through a second day of intensive work with Team Qi-Meritus.Mahara engineers. A number of red flags slowed the flow of the work in the course of this second day.
In the morning session, Luca Filippi completed 36 laps and clocked fastest time of the day overall with a lap of 1.21.562. Team mate Hiroki Yoshimoto only covered 15 laps in the morning (1.24.135) after his engineers discovered a software problem causing a faulty throttle map to disrupt his working plan. In the afternoon, Luca FILIPPI completed 1.23.004 (31 laps) while Hiroki YOSHIMOTO completed 20 laps (1.23.698).
Luca Filippi commented, "I am happy with my times and the results, but there is still room for improvement. We are only starting to understand the new car and which directions to develop our working program so that the team can progress quicker. I would also like to be able to compare my times to Hiroki's when the electronics of the new safety system is finally sorted out. In the afternoon, a technical issue affected our gear shifting and slowed our times. I did not get a chance to try to do a good lap time. We still have one set of spare tires to work from for the two remaining days of testing. We can still improve a bit. We will be ready Friday for the start of the first week-end of the season."
Hiroki Yoshimoto commented, "I hope that after battling all morning we have now got the electrics and various software issues under control and sorted out. My test weekend really only started towards the end of the morning. In the afternoon, I only manage to get out in the last hour of the three hour session when all drivers were out and at the limit. We know where to start to continue in the right direction and have learnt what needs to be done on the car. Luckily, I have plenty of tyres left for the rest of the test session so I can add more mileage on the new 2008 car."
Peter Thompson, President and team founder of Qi-Meritus.Mahara: "We've had an encouraging day at the track and found some good pace with Luca FILIPPI. The engineers worked hard overnight to understand everything we did yesterday and it seems to be paying off."
