With twelfth position in the Sprint Race in Bahrain, Javier Villa completed his participation in the GP2 Asia Series, a contest in which he has competed throughout the winter season with the objective of preparing in the best possible way for the European series of the category, the stepping-stone to F1.
Today Javi started off from 15th position on the grid after the unfortunate Feature Race yesterday, but he had few chances to gain many positions. First because of a difficult start, in that a multiple accident took place that forced the intervention of the Safety Car, this reduced the number of laps, so that there was even less time to gain positions. Secondly because after initially running at a rate near the cars ahead, Javi noticed almost immediately that the tyres of his Dallara were degrading excessively which prevented him from improving his lap times and which limited him to holding his position to the end of the race crossing the line in twelfth.
At the finish Javi completed the GP2 Asia Series in tenth position in the general classification, being usually one of the fastest runners and fulfilling his main objective when he embarked on this contest with the Super Nova team: to take the rate of competition in the previous months to the European season and to take advantage of the tests between the Asian series to integrate himself perfectly in his new team, which is more and more to his liking. Now, in just two weeks, the great challenge for Villa and Super Nova begins, the European GP2 series, in which driver and team are putting their sights on this year.
Javier Villa's own words: "With this race we have finished the Asian season and I believe that it has been worth the trouble to compete in this championship. We learned much, with different circuits, in addition with many changes to temperature, running up to forty degrees and with rain and I think that is good for all the drivers. It is something that I wanted to have done in previous seasons and this year finally we had the opportunity to do it with Super Nova. I think that it is a very professional team, about which I am very happy. They have the same idea that I have with respect to fighting for the championship in Europe and think that we can be competitive there. As far as the summary of the Asian series, I believe that we deserved much better results, we were always amongst the fastest and did a good job, but by an accumulation of circumstances more was not gained, although our main objective is Europe. I would emphasize that I did not make any driver errors, I didn't spin or leave the track and that is something that demonstrates that when things they well and everything is to your taste, as much in the car as with the surroundings, it is reflected one hundred percent in the driving."
