PODIUM FOR BARWA CAMPOS TEAM IN GP2 ASIA SERIES.
VITALY PETROV 5TH AND SERGIO PEREZ 7TH
There were good results for the Barwa Campos Team with the team finishing third overall in the constructors championship and both drivers Vitaly Petrov and Sergio Perez in the top seven of the overall rankings, after today's race which took place at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain.
Vitaly drove a very good race and from his 19th position on the starting grid he managed to fight his way through the main group, something meritorious in the such a short race where drivers do not give up their position easily, and finished in a very creditable eleventh place.
Sergio was affected by an incident that happened at the end of the straight on the first lap, where various drivers collided and forced him off the track and meant that he lost ground. Instead of fighting it out with the leading drivers, he was relegated to a position in the middle of the field. Nevertheless, he drove a fine race which took him to 9th at the chequered flag, climbing three places from his start position.
The GP2 Asia series has finished with Alejandro Agag's team finishing yet again in the top three of the team championship. This is becoming a good habit as it is the fourth consecutive time that the team has finished in the top three at this level. The Barwa Campos Team project has consolidated on the international stage and gained prestige. The image of both the team and that of Spanish Motor-racing has been given a another great boost. GP2 is the last step towards Formula 1 and there can be no doubt about its global success in a sport that is now considered to be the most prestigious on the planet.
In the overall drivers championship, Vitaly Petrov finished fifth which confirms his position as one of the best drivers in the last couple of years and shows that he is in form for the GP2 Main Series, which is about to get under way. Once more the Russian driver will be flying the Barwa Campos Team colours.
Sergio Perez finished in a very good seventh position overall. It's important to take into account that not only is he a rookie to this class but he was also the youngest driver in the field, which makes his feat all the more remarkable, especially when you include the two victories in his debut season.
Vitaly Petrov: "It was a pity the bad luck that we've had this weekend, particularly with the mechanical problems which didn't give me the opportunity to finish in the top three overall, as it was my intention to celebrate all the good work the team has done throughout the whole of the 2009 GP2 Asia series. However we can be pretty satisfied with the final result, the team finishing third and two drivers in the top seven isn't a bad result. Within two weeks we will be in Spain competing in the first GP2 race of the Main series. I'm really excited and optimistic to compete with the Campos Barwa Team because we get on really well and I'm sure we'll have a great season."
Sergio Perez: "Unfortunately it hasn't been our best weekend because we've had a lot of problems with the car which didn't perform as we had hope and expected. In today's race we managed to get things right but it was too little too late.
I would like to thank the Barwa Campos Team for the opportunity they have given me to make my debut in this class and hope that they have a magnificent season in 2009 because they deserve it. They are a magnificent team with whom I've worked very well and very hard. With this team I've had some really great moments reaching the top spot on the winner's rostrum in my rookie season. It's been a pleasure to work with everybody and I think I have taken advantage of the time spent here to learn a lot which will help me towards my future in the sport."
