SERGIO PEREZ STARTS TOMORROW ON POLE. VITALY PETROV 10TH
Without many incidents to report, the first race of the Asia Series 2009 has taken place at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrein. The drivers of the Barwa International Racing Team, Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov have finished eighth and tenth respectively.
Both drivers made good starts despite being affected by two drivers in front of them who went wide. They were forced to swerve to avoid an accident which unfortunately conditioned the rest of the race.
Despite all this, Sergio Perez completed the first lap in eighth place which meant that he had climbed five positions from his original start position. From then on he fought hard to stay with the main group of of eight drivers who were between the 3rd and 11th positions. He came out of his obligatory pit stop and competed hard which was rewarded by him getting into the points and assures pole position for tomorrow's race. He kept a good race rhythm and his times were up there with the leading times. Sergio continues to demonstrate that he has adapted very well to this class despite his lack of experience.
Vitaly Petrov who was more affected by the confusion at the start, climbed one place and was able to get in among the group of eight. However, being at the back of the group he was forced to take risks and he decided to come into the pits and change tyres early after only seven laps. A problem with one of the wheel nuts meant that he lost a lot of time in his Pit Stop and he came back out on the track in no-man's land. He produced a string of good lap times which gave him the opportunity to claw his way back to the main group. This feat deserved something more than a creditable 10th place due to the fact that he drove a great part of the race on the same set of tyres.
Tomorrow the second race will get under way at 13.00 hrs local time and the drivers of the Barwa International Campos Team are hopeful of putting up a good show. Sergio magnificent start position is positive and Vitaly's experience and his fighting abilities are plus factors, despite health problems which have been dogging him this week including a high temperature.
