Villa stars in qualifying thriller
Arden drivers Javier Villa and Charles Pic maintained their strong recent form during qualifying for tomorrow afternoon's GP2 Asia Series race at the Sakhir International Circuit, Bahrain. After creating a favourable impression last time out in Abu Dhabi, his first event with the team, Villa posted a superb 1m 43.519s lap today -- a whisker away from pole position but good enough for only third on the grid. Just 0.049s separated the fastest four drivers...
Villa's promising young team-mate Charles Pic is well placed, too. His best time of 1m 44.172s secured ninth place on the 24-car grid.
"It was a good qualifying session -- and very close, with less than half a tenth between the top four drivers. The car didn't feel as though it was in qualifying trim, though. It was fast and consistent, which is encouraging from a race perspective. I feel optimistic about tomorrow. The team has done a lot of good work since Abu Dhabi -- we've taken a big step forward and I'm sure we can continue in this direction.
"The circuit's grip level improved significantly between free practice and qualifying, but the set-up changes we made were just right for the conditions. Things will doubtless evolve again before the race starts, but I'm confident the car will be perfect."
"I'd hoped for a better result, if I'm honest. I haven't driven here before and was still trying to learn the circuit during qualifying. I wasn't able to put all my sectors together this afternoon and didn't make optimal use of my new tyres. We will study the data tonight to see what we can improve for tomorrow. I had quite a bit of mid-corner and exit understeer, but I'm confident that we'll find a solution."
