Sunday, November 01, 2009 - Italian Luca Filippi and Brazilian Diego Nunes had different results for their first race weekend at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. Luca Filippi capitalised on his positive qualifying result and secured a great podium for the Malaysian motorsport ambassadors MalaysiaQI-Meritus.com in the first race of the opening round of 2009 GP2 Asia season. Diego Nunes was less fortunate as his car's drive shaft broke in the early stages.
The grid was then reversed in the top eight for the start of the 22-lap second race and Luca Filippi started from seventh position while Diego Nunes started from 24th at the back of the grid, following his retirement from race one.
Both drivers went for a strong start and a faultless race. Diego Nunes passed six cars at the start and already up to 18th at the end of the first lap, and up to 17th on lap five. Meanwhile Luca Filippi improved by two positions from the start and on lap 12 was pressuring Oliver Turvey ahead of him, trying to find a way past.
Filippi spun on lap 14, but continued at turn 8 losing time and three places, dropping to 8th, just before Fabio Leimer and William Bratt touched and the safety car was deployed with seven laps to go. With four laps to go, Nunes was in 13th position as the chequered flag fell on the race.
Luca Filippi commented, "I would have liked to do better, both for me and for the team. I had a good start and was fifth fastest. I noticed yesterday, but I saw it again today, Valsecchi has more power than us in the end and his engine is much stronger. No way I could pass him. In the end, I lost three positions and it was too late to come back. I wanted more than yesterday. So I am disappointed as I think that we had a car for the podium."
Diego Nunes commented, "Starting from the back and finishing 13th is a good result, even if it was not the one we wanted. I am disappointed because we had the potential but our driveshaft problem really cost us the opportunity for points. On the positive side, I stayed out of trouble and finished this race in good position. There is still a lot of work to do in the future."
Chairman Raad S. Abduljawad said: "We are looking at a positive weekend with a great podium result in this incredible state-of-the-art facility. It is a positive way to start the season and we are looking forward to our second race again in a few weeks time on this track in February."
Peter Thompson, President and team founder: "It's a pity that we could not maximize our cars and had serious problems with Diego Nunes' car. I would have preferred to leave here with more points as we had the potential to do so. Today we finished the race with both cars. Overall though it's been a good weekend for our Malaysian team and a good start to the season with Luca Filippi's podium. I also would like to thank Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Ibni Almarhuon Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, Sultan of Selangor who congratulated the team on our performance."
