GIEDO VAN DER GARDE FINISHES ONCE MORE ON PODIUM, PIC AFTER GREAT FIGHTBACK 10th
BARWA ADDAX TEAM ONCE MORE IN TOP THREE IN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
After today’s last race in this season’s GP2 Asia Series 2011 at the legendary Imola circuit, the championship concluded with both Giedo van der Garde and Barwa Addax Team finishing third overall in the driver’s and constructor’s championship. Today Giedo managed to finish third in the sprint race and Charles Pic made a great fightback to cross the finish line in a very meritorious 10th position..
As is becoming habit recently, Giedo van der Garde made yet another flying start, but particularly this time around because he had to be aware of the trouble up in front to avoid getting caught up in the melee. What’s more it meant climbing up to third place after the first lap. After keeping up the pace with the leading two drivers for part of the race, he started to have to work hard to keep the chasing pack at bay. This meant that he had to forget about the front runners and dedicate himself to defending his race position. In the end he was able to pull away once more, crossing the finish line almost four seconds ahead having had the best race rhythm of all his rivals in the last five laps. Van der Garde has had a great weekend guaranteeing two podium positions and demonstrating once more that he is one of the best drivers on the motor racing scene at the moment.
Charles Pic has seen a return to his best form. Starting from 21st on the start grid and on a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking, managed to make up eleven positions to finish 10th. He made a solid start but once again started to suffer from the same problems as in the first race. He was struggling to find race rhythm in the first few laps and started losing a lot of ground. Despite physical problems and being consistently caught up in traffic, he managed to do some great overtaking. One thing that shows he is back to his best, is that only four drivers were able to break the 1.29 barrier and Charles was one of them. This will give him a great confidence boost and he has now clearly demonstrated that he can be up there with the best of them leading up to the GP2 Main Series in Europe.
With the GP2 Asia Series having come to the end of its season, Giedo van der Garde managed to finish third overall in the driver’s championship and is clearly one of the favourites for the GP2 Main series. The Spanish Barwa Addax Team, have not only placed one of its drivers on the podium, but have also finished third overall in the team championship something they have achieved in every one of the championships since it was inaugurated in 2007.
The next GP2 event, will be corresponding to the GP2 Main Series in Europe. It will take place alongside the Formula 1 GP at the Istanbul Park circuit, Turkey, the weekend 6th - 8th May.
