Charles Pic Starts Tomorrow’S Race On Pole. Giedo Forced To Retire After Being Shunted Off Track.

Barwa Addax Team Remain Leader, Van Der Garde 2nd And Pic, 5th.

Barwa Addax Team suffered more than their fair share of bad luck in today’s first GP2 race in Monaco. Giedo van der Garde was hit by another driver while he was running 4th in the race and Charles Pic fought back to finish 8th.

Giedo van der Garde, made a great start despite the problems which occurred due to the pole driver getting caught out at the start of the race, creating havoc among the front runners. He had settled into a comfortable fourth position and was looking to decide on what strategy to take and when to make his pit stop, when another driver hit him from behind destroying his rear wing as he was braking going into the chicane. The race stewards made him come into the pits to repair the damaged rear part of the car. The Dutch driver tried to get back into the race was forced to retire two laps later due to the damage sustained on his car.

Charles Pic, started from 12th position on the starting grid. He made a good start but must have been startled as he avoided the car that had stalled on the front row of the grid at the start by a whisker. The Barwa Addax Team took a very brave decision to bring him in for his pit stop at the earliest possible opportunity. It was a risky move because it meant that he had to drive the rest of the race on the same set of tyres and in his situation it was difficult to overtake many cars on this notoriously tight and difficult circuit. In the end, the decision was the right one because he managed to climb to eighth position and will start from pole position for tomorrow’s second sprint race.

Despite today’s unfortunate events, Barwa Addax Team holds on to the lead in the constructor’s championship on 36 points. It’s a pity because both drivers were in position to accumulate a lot of points both here with Giedo in a very solid 4th position and during the second race at Montmelo. It is difficult seeing the Dutch driver picking up points from his lowly grid position for tomorrow. 4 clear opportunities to pick up valuable have disappeared through no fault of the driver.

Giedo van de Garde is still second overall in the driver’s championship despite all the misfortune that has surrounded him in recent races. However it is very unlikely that he will score any points tomorrow. It’s a pity because he could easily have been leader of the championship out on his own. All of this despite having been given a harsh 5 place penalty by race officials for the first race. Charles Pic, maintains his fifth position overall in the driver’s rankings after having made it into the points today and is now on 16 points. Hopefully tomorrow Pic will have luck on his side and he gets a result that his efforts deserve.

The second GP2 sprint race will get under way at 16.10 hrs local time. It will be raced over a distance of 100.200 Kms which is 30 laps round this unique street circuit. In Spain, the channel Marca TV, have announced that will broadcast tomorrow’s race on Sunday morning at 11.15 hrs.
