Giedo van der Garde on podium once more in Silverstone
Barwa Addax team leader. Giedo consolidates 2nd position Pic remains 5th
Another podium place finish for the Barwa Addax Team in the second GP2 Series race which took place today at the British circuit of Silverstone with Giedo van der Garde finishing third, while team mate Charles Pic, crossed the finish line in 10th position. The Spanish team and both drivers maintain their overall ranking.
Giedo van der Garde finished with a podium place finish despite the weekend having started badly with an accident in free practice, which meant that together with the rain he was unable to make an impression in qualifying. From his 19th position on the start grid in the first race he managed to climb through the field and get into the points. In the second race he climbed onto the podium, rounding off a great come back for both team and driver. In the second race on Sunday Giedo was intelligent and conservative making sure the tyres didn’t suffer from too much graining in what was a hard battle between the top 4 drivers fighting it out for a podium position.
Charles Pic was unable to shine as on other occasions because he was caught behind two of the most competitive and experienced drivers in the field, Philippi and Parente as well as the rest of the peloton. Pic had a hard tough battle with the drivers around him with one or two great overtakes but he spent as much time defending his position, making it difficult for him to get the race rhythm he wanted. He was frustrated being clearly quicker than his rivals. Yet another weekend without luck for the French driver who was competitive in the first race but his unfortunate collision sealed his fate just when he was making moves towards the leading drivers.
Barwa Addax Team is still on top of the team classification on 62 point followed by iSport on 49 and Dams on 47. In the driver’s championship, Giedo van der Garde remains second overall on 38 points only 9 points behind the leader and 6 ahead of the third place driver. Charles Pic holds on to his fifth position overall despite not having scored any points this weekend.
The next event in the GP2 Series 2011, will take place at the German Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend at the Nurnburgring circuit, between the 22nd and 24th of July.
