Circuit De Catalunya
Giedo Van Der Garde 1st, Pole Position, Charles Pic 3rd.
Barwa Addax Team Place Both Drivers In The Top Three.
At the Spanish Montmeló circuit, Barwa Addax Team have put up great performances with both drivers qualifying in the first three positions for tomorrow’s first race. Giedo van der Garde starts from pole position on the starting grid and team-mate, Charles Pic who starts from third.
Giedo van der Garde has driven brilliantly in the practice sessions, setting the fourth fastest lap time in free practice. In the official qualifications he posted a magnificent lap time of 1.30.473 which gave him the second fastest time, just one tenth of a second off pole position on the first set of tyres. When all the drivers tried to improve on their times on the second set of tyres, it was clear that no-one could get close to his time, so it was decided not to force on the second set to improve on his time and thereby preserve the tyres for what will be without doubt a hard and long race particularly from the front row of the grid. All teams are wary of the fact that this circuit is particularly hard on the wear of tyres which is causing more than a headache or two down in pit lane. Later in the day the news broke that the driver who had set the fastest lap time had been penalized for not having respected yellow flags and this allowed van der Garde to move up one place and the right to start from pole position for Saturday’s race.
Charles Pic, also had a satisfactory day of practice sessions. In the free practice session he finished in 6th position. In the qualifications he had a similar run to his team mate and set a time of 1.30.616 only two tenths of a second off the pole position, which means he starts from the second row of the start grid. Charles also decided not to push hard on the second set of tyres, so providing there are not electrical problems at the start of the race the young French driver looks set to make a good performance.
The Spanish Barwa Addax Team look to be in very good shape to hold on to their lead in the race for the team title for tomorrow’s race which takes place at 15,40 hrs local time. The first race will be over 37 laps and will cover a distance of 172.109 Kms.
