Grid position penalty makes Dani Clos drop to P11
Dani Clos, Jules Bianchi, Pastor Maldonado, Sam Bird, Jerome d'Ambrosio and Giedo van der Garde were handed 10 place grid penalties for Saturday's feature race at the Abu Dhabi Yas Marina circuit for having "exited the pitlane against red light". The incident happened once the session was over and all six drivers were decided to have failed to stop at the pitlane exit.
Those six drivers were finishing the qualifying session in the pitlane instead of taking the checkered flag on the track, like all other drivers who continued on track to the GP2 pits. Dani commented that he planned to stop his car in the pitlane when the session was over, but was indicated by marshals to continue to the GP2 pits. He was shown that the car was not allowed to be stopped in the pitlane and Dani followed the cars of other drivers finding themselves in the same situation. They passed a blinking red light while exiting the pitlane to get back to their GP2 pits.
Following the given instructions results in the Spaniard losing his front row position for Saturday's feature race, but also the remaining chances to take second position away from Perez in the drivers' championship. Before the penalties being applied, Bianchi, Dani and Bird still had mathematical chances of finishing in second position. However, with the third, fourth and fifth in the championship standings dropping 10 positions on tomorrow's grid, it is very unlikely for them to still endanger Perez.
Dani Clos: "After the session, several drivers, including myself, were penalized due to a confusion with the marshals in the pitlane once the session was over. It's a shame as we were in a really good position to attack. Now we have to see what tomorrow brings."
