Sergio Perez (Barwa Addax Team) and Davide Valsecchi (iSport International) were both winners in Bridgestone's final round of the GP2 Series held in Abu Dhabi (12-14 November). Racing on Bridgestone's medium specification dry tyre, Rapax secured the GP2 teams' championship title on Sunday.
The performance and durability of Bridgestone's tyres at the Yas Marina Circuit this weekend has been consistent, although influenced by the track surface which started sandy, offering low grip during the earlier GP2 sessions. GP2's teams and drivers were challenged to find as much grip as possible and to take advantage of the circuit's evolution as it rubbered-in.
Perez started Saturday's 31 lap feature race in a dominant fashion, which he faultlessly maintained throughout the race. Overtaking pole sitter Oliver Turvey (iSport International) before the first corner, the Mexican driver crossed the line an impressive 21 seconds ahead of the Briton. ART Grand Prix's Sam Bird worked his way up from 18th on the grid to take a well deserved third place finish. Perez set the fastest time on the penultimate lap and praised the consistent performance of his tyres.
In Sunday's 22 lap sprint race, Valsecchi moved up from fourth on the grid to lead after the first corner, managing to keep Luiz Razia (Rapax) and Romain Grosjean (DAMS) behind him throughout. Perez collided with Bird on lap 5 which ended the hopes of the Barwa Addax Team in terms of the teams' championship title. Razia collected the point for fastest lap.
The 2010 GP2 Series Champion Pastor Maldonado, from Venezuela, will now collect his US$100,000 Prize from Bridgestone, as he finishes his year with Rapax on 87 points in the drivers' championship standings. Perez is Vice Champion with 71 points as Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) clinches third place on 52 points. Rapax has won the teams' championship with 115 points while the Barwa Addax Team has finished the season on 110. ART Grand Prix are third in the standings with 100.
Quote from Mr Hiroshi Yasukawa - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport
"Congratulations to Pastor Maldonado and Rapax for being this year's GP2 Series Champions. Congratulations also to Sergio Perez and Davide Valsecchi for their wins here at the Yas Marina Circuit, which is the last race weekend for Bridgestone in GP2. Thank you to the GP2 organisers, teams and drivers for the successful partnership we have shared over the last six years. We are very proud to have helped generate so many young talented drivers for Formula One. Bridgestone is also proud to have provided safety and fairness in GP2 through the production of our GP2 tyres."
Quote from Hirohide Hamashima - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development
"Sergio Perez and Davide Valsecchi gave strong performances this weekend, in two highly entertaining races. We have witnessed plenty of overtaking here in Abu Dhabi, particularly on the long straight before turn eight, and at turns 11 and 21. The GP2 drivers have been involved in many exciting on-track battles making it a fitting spectacle for Bridgestone's last GP2 race event. Our Potenza tyres have performed well despite some graining early on in the weekend, but this was to be expected as a result of the surface conditions. We are pleased to have had six years of great racing and 125 races in GP2."
