Matteo Santoponte narrowly beat Dario Caso to take pole in the first Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli/Asia-Pacific race at the Finali Mondiali at Mugello.
Practice pacesetter Santoponte, who competes under the pseudonym ‘Babalus’, surged to the top of the timesheets towards the end of the 30-minute session with a time of 1m52.581s.
Caso meanwhile fell 0.055s short of his compatriot, setting for second ahead of David Gostner and already-crowned Ferrari Challenge Europe champion Bjorn Grossmann, who set the early pace.
Alessandro Vezzoni was best of the Trofeo Pirelli Am runners in fifth overall.
Best of the Asia-Pacific contingent was Indonesia’s Renaldi Hutasoit, while Tani Hanna and Tadakazu Kojima took honours in the Asian Trofeo Pirelli Am and Coppa Shell classes respectively.
