Overview of Denver race:
Team APEX Racing USA had a sweet and sour weekend on the streets of Denver in August. Driver Robert Wickens started ? for Saturday's Round 11 and was able to stay in front to post his second victory of the season. On Sunday, things did not go as well for the young Canadian driver as a miscue on the start negated the pole position he had earned the day before. Wickens, however, was able to put his experience on street courses to good use and move up through the pack to finish a respectable 5th .
The team was quite happy with what they were able to accomplish in Denver. Wickens win on Saturday combined with Sunday's 5th place finish helped him cut his deficit in th championship race in half. Going into Road Atlanta, Wickens and Team APEX still have a shot at the championship.
Preview of Road Atlanta:
Team APEX Racing USA looks to be the underdog, but is still in strong contention for the 2005 Overall Driver and Rookie Driver titles.
"We have far exceeded our expectations," says Robert Wickens, the 16 year old Canadian who has made his first season in Formula BMW USA one to remember. "I had hoped to be in the fight for the rookie title, but to also have a shot at the whole championship is just amazing. This team...I mean, it's amazing. We are a rookie team, but have performed this season like a veteran squad. I can't wait to get back in the car."
Wickens says that the hilly 12 turn 2.54 mile Road Atlanta looks to be one that will play into the hands of Team APEX Racing USA. "I like it," says Wickens. "Road Atlanta looks like a track that I will adapt to very quickly."
"It's hard to believe this season is already coming to an end," said team co-owner David Hunt. "What started less than 8 months ago as a dream has turned into one of the greatest experiences of my life. For Robert to get our first win in this series at his home track during the Canadian Grand Prix...to win again at Denver, to earn five podium finishes and a pole. Anything that we do at Road Atlanta is just icing on the cake, but to leave there with a title, maybe two? That's what we're shooting for."
While Team APEX Racing USA is 4th in the current team championship standings, Wickens finds himself trailing Richard Phillipe by a scant three points in the chase for the 2005 Rookie title. Wickens is third in the overall driver championship standings, 11 points behind leader Phillipe and nine points back of second place Kevin Lacroix.
