Philippe Will Race for Championship from Round 14 Pole
Braselton, Ga. - Sept. 29, 2005-- Richard Philippe (Team Autotecnica) will start the final race of the 2005 Formula BMW USA season from the same position he began the first race - the pole. The 15-year old Junior driver, and current Overall and Rookie points leader, scored his sixth pole of the season in today's 30-minute Round 14 qualifying session. He set a new qualifying record of 1:28.543 minutes around the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta road course. Reed Stevens (HBR Motorsport Team USA) qualified second (1:28.668), equalling his best effort of the season. Edoardo Piscopo (EuroInternational), the most recent Formula BMW USA winner and front row starter in this afternoon's Round 13 contest, will start third (1:28.923).
Robert Wickens (Team Apex Racing USA), also in the hunt for the Overall and Rookie titles, will start seventh. Round 13 polesitter Kevin Lacroix (AIM Autosport), currently second in the Championship standings, was sixth fastest in the session, but will start at the rear of the field after his time was disallowed following post- qualifying inspection.
Philippe said, "My strategy for tomorrow's race is start first and finish first - simple as that. It is good to have the pole position. It is less stress for me because I don't have any doubt about my speed. I am here to win the Championship."
Stevens added, "The track changed a little bit from yesterday. There was some more grip in turn five and turn seven, so we came in and made some adjustments to the car. When I went back out I was quick right away. We really wanted the pole position today, but second is not so bad. If everything goes perfectly this weekend a third place in the Championship is possible, but I hope to end up at least inside the top-five."
Piscopo said, "We made a mistake today by using the tires from yesterday. It was very difficult to improve my lap times. I do feel I have established a good rythym and think in the race we will have a close fight. Unfortunately I cannot aim for more than the fifth position in the Championship because I missed the first rounds."
The quickest Rookies in Round 13 qualifying were Philippe (P1), Stevens (P2), Piscopo (P3), Davison (P5) and Bunker (P6).
The Round 13 race is scheduled to start at 3:20 p.m. today. The Round 14 race is scheduled to start at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, and the Championship Banquet will begin at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
