Hinchcliffe gets his first Formula BMW USA win at Road America
Elkhart Lake, Wis. - Aug. 8, 2004-- With four second place finishes to-date this season, Rookie Points leader James Hinchcliffe took his first Formula BMW USA Championship victory today in Round 10 at Road America. He completed eight laps of the 4.048-mile Road America circuit in the 30-minute contest, finishing 1.130 seconds ahead of Jonathan Summerton. Championship points leader Andreas Wirth finished third.
As the field completed its first lap the yellow flag flew for the spinning No. 7 of Tom Sutherland. Hinchcliffe led followed by pole-sitter Jonathan Summerton and Brian Frisselle, who had gotten a great start from the fifth position. The green was shown on lap three and the battle continued. Round 9 winner Andreas Wirth moved past Frisselle for third on lap four and then past Summerton for second on lap five. Hinchcliffe continued to lead Wirth on lap six by 1.3 seconds. Summerton moved into third and Jaskol moved up to fourth. As the white flag was shown it was still Hinchcliffe, but by less than one second ahead of Wirth and Summerton. Summerton snuck past Wirth for second, but it was Hinchcliffe all the way for his first win.
Wirth continues to lead the Championship with 147 points. Summerton is second (123), Hinchcliffe third (122), Jaskol fourth (101) and Johnson fifth (70).
The top-finishing Rookies were Hinchcliffe, Summerton and Graham Rahal.
Hinchcliffe still leads the Rookie Points with 160 points. Summerton is second (151), Milner third (105), Rahal fourth (90) and Sutherland fifth (73).
"It's about time," said Hinchcliffe. "I had a good car yesterday, but I made that mistake. The team was down, but we knew we had a good shot today. We bounced back for our first win and I am delighted."
Summerton added, "On the first lap I lost two positions in the first corner and by the second corner I was in sixth. I really had to battle my way back to the front. Andreas and I tried to work together to catch James, but he had the car to win today."
Wirth said, "I had a terrible start and lost four positions, but I knew I could get back to the front. I am satisfied with third place and especially the 12 important points in the Championship."
Rounds 11 and 12 will take place in support of the Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver on August 13th - 15th.
