Rookie Points leader Hinchcliffe scores his third pole of the season

Elkhart Lake, Wis. - Aug. 6, 2004-- Rookie Points leader James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport) scored his third pole of the 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship with a lap of 2:19.786 minutes around the 4.048-mile Road America circuit. The 25- minute session was shorted by two separate incidents that brought out the red flag to remove cars that had spun. Graham Rahal will start second (2:19.842) in his best qualifying effort of the year. Brian Frisselle, also with his best qualifying performance of the season, will start third (2:20.143). The top-seven in the field are separated by less than one second ensuring another exciting Formula BMW USA contest in Round 9.

Only seven points separate the top-five in the Championship battle. The top-five in points are Andreas Wirth (115), Jonathan Summerton (108), James Hinchcliffe (102), Matt Jaskol (79) and Billy Johnson (54).

James Hinchcliffe leads the Rookie points with 140. Summerton is second (128), Milner third (95), Graham Rahal fourth (58) and Tom Sutherland fifth (54).

The quickest Rookies in today's qualifying session were Hinchcliffe, Rahal and Summerton.

"The two red flags did not help," said Hinchcliffe. "The cars take a few laps to come up to speed and on a circuit as long as this one having to stop compounds the difficulty in getting a good lap time. I was fortunate to get a fast time early and the red flags made it hard for anyone to catch me."

A charged-up Rahal said, "The recent testing at Grattan and here on Wednesday has given me more confidence to drive hard. We are coming to the end of the season and it is about time that I put the learning experience excuse behind me and start to get some results."

The Round 9 race is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. tomorrow after Round 10 qualifying at 11:35 a.m. Sunday's Round 10 race is scheduled to start at 12:05 p.m.
