Philip Major completes FBMW pre-season testing schedule.
The Formula BMW USA Championship winter testing schedule wrapped up in dramatic fashion at Charlotte Motorsports Park, NC this afternoon.
The spectacularly close-fought series for young up-and-coming drivers had to be red-flagged as one youngster somersaulted his car into the gravel trap. But if some drivers were making dramatic exits, 17 year old rookie Philip Major kept his head down and his foot hard on the throttle, ensuring he utilized every last moment of the final day's testing.
Major and his Atlantic Racing Team were again at the sharp-end of the timesheets throughout the pair of sessions, the Atlantic crew carefully fine tuning the car whilst Major honed his skills inside the cockpit.
The results from the first session were encouraging, Major topping his times from the previous day. "The speed is there" Philip noted, "but we've used the same tires and they are past their best."
With fresh rubber and just under an hour's running time remaining, Major returned to the track for the last few precious minutes of 'winter testing', blistering around the circuit to record a fabulous time of 1.34.994 that put him fifth overall. "It feels really good to be in the top five," said the Ottawa racer, "but you know, I'm never satisfied until I'm P1." He added, although his constant quest for self-improvement weren't doing justice to his outstanding achievements against some of the toughest junior competition in the world .
The 2006 FBMW Championship kicks-off at the glorious Mid-Ohio Sportscar Track on May 28th as part of the ALMS race weekend. "I think it's going to be extremely exciting and I look forward to it because I know it's going to be a good race." Said Major, still basking in the afterglow of a fine weekend's work. "Now I just can't wait to start racing."
