Dark weekend for Pelletier at Elkhart Lake
Montreal, August 15, 2007. -- Maxime Pelletier had high hopes going into the sixth Formula BMW USA ladder series double header last weekend at Elkhart Lake Road America race facility. He had a string of podium finishes and a strong FB02 #10 HBR Motorsports single seater to help him strenghten his second place in the series standings with the points he was given back from the Montreal third round in June. However, an avoidable contact from a competitor, a disqualification and a slow puncture took all his chances away and he could only manage two 14 places in each round, falling to fourth in the season standings.
"There are weekends when you wish you would have stayed home, whispered Pelletier sadly. I was starting from seventh place in the first round and was moving forward very quickly around this beautiful track. I had hopes of a podium finish and my main competitor was starting last. But a contact I found intentional from the series leader (Morad) took me right out of contention on the fifth lap. He was fined by the officials and put on probation but that really doesn't give me back the valuable points I lost."
"In the second round, I had to start last after earning my first pole because my car was too low, by 7 ounces, on fuel. I accepted the decision and concentrated on racing hard. I had the best time in morning warm-up and was looking for another good finish. >From the green flag, I carved my way up to the front, only to be slowed down by a puncture that had me finishing again in 14th."
"I was pretty discouraged after the weekend. I need to be almost perfect for the last meeting in ten days at Mosport. I will keep on training and regroup with my HBR crew for the occasion. Last weekend was a tough learning curve."
Mosport, next and last
The last program of the season will be staged at Mosport, the famous Ontario racing complex, on August 24 -- 26. This could be the swan song for Pelletier in the series after two seasons. Different avenues are being considered for the rest of the season and next year. But a presence at the World finale in Valencia is a serious possibility.
Maxime Pelletier is in his second year in the North American premier ladder series Formula BMW USA after being nominated Junior driver last year. He is racing with the Austrian HBR Motorsports team. Road America was the sixth of seven double header programs in the 2007 schedule. Pelletier is fourth in the 2007 standings.
