Winner of first round in BMW series
Two podiums for Kevin Lacroix at Laguna Seca
Laguna Seca, May 2nd . -- Kevin Lacroix didn't wait long to earn his first career open-wheel race as he drove away from the field on the first lap of the season to finally cross the finish line in flying colors and climb on the highest step of the Formula BMW USA podium at Laguna Seca in California. He had qualified in fourth place on Friday. For the second race, he was starting from second row again (3rd place) and kept his position for the 15-lap round, earning a third place. After two races, the 16-year old rookie enjoys a 5-point lead in the season standings.
"I have to admit I'm very happy with this first weekend, says Kevin. I wanted to prove I could fight for the title and the best way was to win a round. That is now behind me and I know who are going to be the guys to beat. The second race was tougher because I was chasing (Maxime) Soulet and was not able to go by him. In some corners I was faster but could not carry enough momentum to move in to second. Meanwhile, (Richard) Philippe was getting away. Now, we'll get ready for Mid-Ohio in a few weeks."
Saturday race: first win
After qualifying in fourth place, Kevin was starting from second row in race #1. A rocket start propelled his Uni-Select FB2 car in the lead in the first corner and from there he was gone till the checkered flag. "I was looking behind sometimes to see if somebody would challenge me, he adds, but they were too busy fighting for second place! I concentrated on keeping the pace and stayed ahead until the checkered flag. I'll remember that moment a long time."
Sunday race: another podium
Kevin admits he was nervous for the Sunday race. "We got off to a good start and kept our positions. The cars are evenly matched in this series and Laguna is a track where passing is not an easy task. I could not find the proper place to pass Soulet and didn't want to open the door to followers by taking a chance or wearing out my tires. So, I kind of settled for third and the precious points. Hats off to my crew, Yvan Turcotte and AIM Motorsport, who gave me a very good car all weekend."
