Among the favorites in Formula BMW
Season Starts for Kevin Lacroix at Laguna Seca
St-Eustache, April 26th . -- After racing karts for eight years, Kevin Lacroix will finally debut his open wheel career next weekend at Laguna Seca raceway in California. The preparation for this maiden race started last fall when the 16-year old was invited to both Formula BMW European evaluation camps from which he came back with a 2005 scholarship. Named the Rising Star by Shifter Kart Magazine, Kevin signed up with AIM Motorsport and constantly topped the timing charts in the pre-season testing days. He was invited to the NASA training center in Alabama for a complete physical evaluation. The last step will finally take him to the track in California.
"I can't wait for the season to start, admits Kevin. I kept pretty busy since I stopped karting and every step like Spain or NASA was very exciting. Working with my crew was a tremendous learning curve and I feel we will have a great season. We have two races per weekend, similar to what we did in karting. I have to be fast all the time but also make sure my car remains healthy on Sunday."
Formula BMW: the French connection
According to Formula BMW officials, three French speaking drivers have constantly signed among the fastest times in the test days. French Richard Philippe, brother of Nelson driving a Champ Car, Belgium Maxime Soulet and Quebec's own Kevin Lacroix have raised more than an eyebrow this spring. But the St-Eustache driver remains confident: "I respect all 21 drivers out there and at least half of them can win races. Most of them are rookies and the battles are going to be fierce. But this is the kind of competition I look for. We have to learn new tracks. Laguna Seca is among the race facilities I have always dreamed to race, after the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and Indianapolis. "
Seven weekends and 14 races
Kevin Lacroix will enter Formula BMW USA series in 2005 with the support of sponsors that have trusted him for many years: Uni-Select network, SKF MotorSports, Raybestos, Tenneco, Pennzoil, Auto Parts Plus and Lacroix Auto Parts.
