Formula BMW USA Junior James Hinchcliffe
Hailing from Oakville, Ontario, James Hinchcliffe has been racing for half of his life and he is only seventeen. James began with 4 cycle go-karts for recreation until he started winning championships throughout his native province and moved into the WKA. After his first taste of driving an 80cc Shifter kart, he realized that racing could be his career as well as his passion. In 2003, he moved into the 125cc Shifter class in the Super Pro ICC classes, Pro ICC in SKUSA and the Stars of Tomorrow. He coupled racing with a pursuit in the amateur school Formula Car series where he finished third in the championship with ten podiums in twelve races. Following the 2003 season, James was ready for the next step into professional racing.
James was already familiar with Formula BMW in Germany and when the announcement that there would be a 2004 Formula BMW series in the United States, he knew it would be the perfect place for him. Upon hearing of the Scholarship Course in Valencia, he saw it as an enormous opportunity to help him make a name for himself in open wheel racing. "The scholarship program was fantastic," said James, "Everyone involved -- instructors, mechanics, the other drivers and the Formula BMW personnel -- all made it such an incredible experience. The track is the best one I have ever had the privilege of driving. Mostly, I was impressed with the cars, they were fun to drive and it was easy to tell they were well built machines from the first few laps. I am very excited to get into a race ready car."
James used his status as a Junior to open doors with several teams and has signed with Aim Autosport based out of Ontario, Canada to pursue the 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship. He is looking forward to representing BMW and plans to arrive at every weekend with the full intention of winning. Because he will bring his positive attitude, he knows that if he works hard and remains dedicated to his goals, the results will come. James stated, "I am confident in myself and in the team I will race with and truly believe that we will be regular contenders for both race wins and the championship."
Outside of his demanding racing schedule, James keeps himself busy. Between his final year in school and playing basketball, soccer and tennis recreationally, he is also an amateur actor. James is very dedicated to physical training to stay healthy and prepare him for the rigors of racing. All of these activities, except school, come after racing, because racing is his top priority. "I will do anything I need to do, work as hard as necessary in order to achieve my overall goals in racing," James remarked.
