Hinchcliffe takes two in Denver

Denver, Colo. - Aug. 15, 2004-- James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport) made another major step towards a possible Formula BMW USA Championship with the first flag- to-flag victory of the season. He led all 20 laps on the 1.657-mile Denver street circuit in the 30-minute Round 12 race, finishing 1.611 seconds ahead of Matt Jaskol. The win was his second of the weekend and third consecutive victory of the season. He moved to within seven points of Championship points leader and today's fourth place finisher Andreas Wirth, and took a commanding 35 point lead in the Rookie points. Matt Jaskol scored his second runner-up finish of the weekend and Graham Rahal finished third, his best finish of the season to-date.

With no one able to catch Hinchcliffe, the best racing was back in the field. Rahal took advantage of a great start and moved from his fifth starting spot to fourth on the first lap and third on the next lap. Team PTG Motorsport teammates Lawson Aschenbach, Tom Milner and Billy Johnson raced among themselves for the fifth, sixth and seventh positions with Aschenbach finishing a season best fifth. Johnson moved up from his ninth starting position to finish just behind Milner in seventh.

Wirth continues to lead the Championship with 169 points. Hinchcliffe stands second (162). Summerton holds onto third (133), only two points ahead of Jaskol (131). Johnson still stands fifth (77).

The top finishing Rookies were Hinchcliffe (P1), Rahal (P3) and Milner (P6).

Hinchcliffe has almost locked up the Rookie title with 180 points, 35 points ahead of second place Summerton (165). Milner is third (121), Rahal fourth (117) and Sutherland fifth (82).

With the final two rounds left to go four drivers are still in the hunt for the inaugural Formula BMW USA Championship and the $50,000 scholarship towards participation in a 2005 Formula BMW Championship. Wirth, Hinchcliffe, Summerton and Jaskol are all in contention. Only two drivers, Hinchcliffe and Jonathan Summerton can capture the Rookie Championship.

"I'm not going to think about the points. I'm going to focus on doing the very best I can in the last two races," said Hinchcliffe. "The AIM Autosport team had the set-up perfect here in Denver and at Road America. I am confident that we will have it right for Laguna Seca."

Jaskol had one of his most consistent weekends of the season with two second- place finishes. "I still have a shot, but even if I can't win the next two races I am sure I will be a major part of the show. We have had some bad luck this season, but I have shown that I have the speed and can bounce back from anything."

An excited Rahal said, "I knew we had one the fastest cars out there today. I was quick on the start and that made the difference in being able to make the right moves at the right time. "

The 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship deciding Rounds 13 and 14 will take place in support of the Monterey Grand Prix on September 10-12.
