Formula BMW USA 2004 Juniors prepare for the Championship
This past January, 23 drivers ranging from the ages of 15 to 23 journeyed to the Formula BMW Racing Center in Valencia, Spain to compete for six Junior Scholarships for the 2004 Formula BMW USA season. The drivers received instruction from and were judged by Mike Strotmann (ex-BMW works driver and Director of the Formula BMW Racing Center) and Jorg Muller (BMW works driver). Of the participants, the following six drivers stood out in their ability and promise to advance to the next level of racing. Each have now confirmed the teams they shall join to contend in the 2004 Championship.
Trevor Daley from Brampton, Ontario has signed with Halifax based Atlantic Racing Team.
James Hinchcliffe out of Oakville Ontario will run with the Ontario based Aim Autosport.
Billy Johnson from Sausalito California has aligned with Prototype Technology Group out of Winchester Virginia.
Tom Milner of Leesburg, Virginia is also running with Prototype Technology Group out of Winchester, Virginia.
Graham Rahal of New Albany, Ohio has signed with Team Rahal based in Hilliard, Ohio.
Jonathan Summerton from Kissimmee Florida has signed with Austria-based HBR Motorsport.
With the support of a $40,000 scholarship, these drivers will also receive courses in sports management, sporting law, public relations, sponsorship, diet and fitness, vehicle technology as well as data analysis. They run under the BMW Motorsport livery on their cars and their complete racing attire. The investment into these drivers will help to develop the skills to help make the next Formula 1 star. And the possibility remains, just like former champions, that perhaps BMW.Williams F1 will extend an invitation to the Formula BMW USA champion to test one of their cars. In the upcoming weeks, we will be profiling each of the Junior Team Members.
