RIO EXTENDS LEAD IN DRIVER'S CHAMPIONSHIP
MARINA BAY, SINGAPORE (SEPT 26, 2009): Questnet Qi Team Meritus driver Rio Haryanto extended his lead at the top of the Formula BMW Pacific driver's championship when he finished second behind Brazil's Felipe Nasr at the Marina Bay Circuit today.
Although he placed second, Rio still collected full points as Nasr, the newly crowned Formula BMW Europe champion, is one of several guest drivers and is not eligible to collect any points.
Besides Nasr, the other guest drivers are his Eurointernational team mate Michael Lews (United States), Formula BMW Americas champion Gabby Chaves (Colombia), Giancarlo Vilarinho (Brazil) who finished second to Chaves in the Formula BMW Americas, Australian James Kovacic and Jack Harvey of Britain.
Rio, who was gunning for his sixth consecutive race win, had mixed emotions following his second placed finish.
"While I'm delighted to have earned full points, it would have been better if I had done so by winning the race itself," said Rio, who set a record when he became the first driver in Formula BMW history to win all four races over one weekend when he dominated the Sentul Circuit a month ago, where he also set the fastest laps in all the races and was on pole for each start.
"However, I have to think about the championship and didn't want to push too hard as it is important to get the points on board. I'm delighted that I managed to extend my lead over my championship rivals. Nasr drove very well and showed what a great champion he is by taking the chequered flag."
Team owner Firhat Mokhzani said: "It was another matured performance from Rio as he did very well to finish a close second to the Formula BMW Europe champion. We can look forward with confidence to our coming races, starting with Round 12 tomorrow."
Last year, Meritus was the first team to win on the Marina Bay Circuit when Romania's Doru Sechelariu won both Formula BMW races there. It was double celebration for Asia's most successful motorsport team as Ross Jamison finished second, before eventually winning the drivers' crown.
There will be one more round of action in the Formula BMW Pacific before the flag off of tomorrow's Formula 1 night race.
