RIO AND DUSTIN LOOKING FORWARD TO RACING IN SEPANG AGAIN
SEPANG (MAY 27, 2009): As the teams get ready for the Formula BMW Pacific in Sepang this weekend, defending champions Meritus Racing are quietly going about their business as they seek to extent their winning run in the series
Champions for the last six years, Meritus will once again be the team to beat this weekend where four races -- two each of Saturday and Sunday will be held. Newly signed drivers Rio Haryanto and Dustin Sofyan, who made their debut for the Malaysian team last month, have been training hard back home in Indonesia, determined to improve on their showing during the first two races in April.
Dustin had a mixed start to the season, finishing fifth in Race 1 and retiring in the first lap of Race 2 after going airborne when he crashed into another car.
"It was a frightening experience but thankfully no one got hurt," said Dustin, at the time. "This is part of racing but I hope never to experience anything like it again."
Rio, meanwhile, was on the podium in both races finishing third on his debut for Meritus, then storming home by more than four seconds to win the second race.
"I put myself under too much pressure in the first race but managed to refocus for the second race. I'm glad to have got my first win under my belt and now I look forward to this weekend's races," said the 16-year-old driver.
"I know the pressure is on the team as they have dominated the series for the last six years but if we all stay calm, then, I'm sure we can be among the leaders again this season."
After Sepang, the series moves to Sentul, Indonesia, for four races from July 17-19, followed by two races each in Singapore (Sept 25-27), Okayama, Japan (Oct 30-Nov 1) and Macau (Nov 20-22).
