OLLIE MILLROY CONTINUES TO IMPRESS UK AND EUROPEAN TEAMS
British Kart Champion 'ready' for BMW Scholarship
Reigning British ICA Super 1 Kart Champion Ollie Millroy has caught the attention of several of Europe's top teams with a remarkable performance in each of his recent test sessions in the UK and Italy. The 17 year-old, from Claygate in Surrey, moved onto an exhaustive test programme in single-seaters commencing just a few months ago in Formula Renault, as he decides on his future path in motorsport.
The teenager has already undergone tests with several leading teams, including an established GP2 team in both FRenault and FBMW and his future testing plans will take in a number of International tracks including Grand Prix circuits Barcelona, Hockenheim, Hungaroring and Monza.
"To say I am enjoying it is an understatement" says Ollie. "I love every minute of it and get a great deal of satisfaction working with the team, checking data and finding extra time. There is so much more involved than there is in karting and learning how to be quick, whilst keeping the car balanced is the key to a quick lap.
"Like any professional sport there is a certain amount of technique involved and to help me I have a top driver coach who is teaching me the finer details of driving a racing car. My intention is to work with him for as long as I can and to be up to speed before the start of the season next year.
"For the first two months I have mainly been testing in Formula Renault although I did go to Valencia to take the BMW licensing course. I had a fantastic two days and learnt a lot. The BMW people are great with young drivers and I came away with a lot more experience and a nomination to try for a scholarship in October.
"If I get it, the European FBMW Championship next year looks very tempting with seven of the eight race weekends being alongside Formula One. I would get a great deal of exposure in the championship and a lot of support and help from BMW. All of my testing now, until the scholarship, will be in a BMW so hopefully I will be ready if and when the time comes."
Ollie successfully completed two days testing this week, on Tuesday and Friday and declared himself happy with the outcome on both occasions.
