Frijns takes vital win and Sainz is Rookie Champion.
Spa-Francorchamps, 29 August 2010. The second race of the weekend in Spa-Francorchamps was not only an exciting one, but also a crucial one for the championship battle as a win by Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing) has moved him to within seven points of championship leader, Jack Harvey (GB/Fortec Motorsports), who finished fourth. Second was race one winner, Javier Tarancon (ES/DAMS), while third was polesitter, Côme Ledogar (FR/Eifelland Racing). Top Rookie for the third time this year was Daniil Kvyat (RU/Eurointernational.
It was very soon after the start that leading Championship Rookie, Carlos Sainz (ES/Eurointernational), ended up as a retirement for the second time in Spa-Francorchamps. In a collision with Frijns he came off worst and that was the end of his race. However, despite this the Spanish youngster, who turns 16 on the 1st September, is now the Rookie Cup winner for 2010. In his first year of single-seater racing not only has he won the Rookie class nine times out of 14, but also started from pole twice and won a race in Silverstone. This also gives his team, Eurointernational, the only title that has so far eluded them in all the Formula BMW series they have competed in.
Tarancon made a good start from second and was leading at the end of lap one from Ledogar and Harvey, with Frijns in fourth. Frijns soon got into his stride and was third by lap three, second by lap four and in the lead by lap six. However, he had anything but an easy race as he was hounded by Ledogar right to the flag. Just behind them the battle for the final podium position also went on through the race and, despite some place swapping, it was the Frenchman who crossed the line 0.2secs in front of the Brit.
Kvyat had a good battle early on for the Rookie lead with Hannes van Asseldonk (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing), but then pulled out a gap and had a lonely race to fifth. The battle for sixth was also pretty frantic, and it really hotted up on lap five with it being between George Katsinis (GR/Fortec Motorsports), van Asseldonk, Maciej Bernacik (PL/Mucke Motorsport) and Timmy Hansen (SE/Mucke Motorsport). While they crossed the line in that order with fractions between them, on the next lap it was Hansen from Bernacik and van Asseldonk, while Katsinis had dropped down behind Michael Lewis (US/Eurointernational). In the end it was Hansen who claimed the spot and so moved to third in the championship.
1st Round 14: Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing): "It was quite a normal start and I didn't win or lose any places. Then at the end of the straight I had Michael on one side and Carlos on the other. I was already past Formula BMW Europe

Michael, but I was on the wet part and Carlos on the dry. He just turned in and I was trying not to hit him, but I did. He spun and I think it was a racing accident. Then Jack came by as I lost all the speed in that corner. I picked up my pace again, overtook Jack with a nice fight and overtook Côme and went for the win. I did some moves that I would not exactly call do or die moves, but I had to do them. It is a tricky one with the championship going to Monza, but I am already second and that will not change."
2nd Round 14: Javier Tarancon (ES/DAMS): "I was thinking perhaps I could win, but Robin was really fast in the second sector and was catching me a lot. It was a nice fight, but finally I was second and he won. Today the track was better than yesterday, but just a bit slippery as it was really cold today. I prefer being first, but it is good to score points as we needed this. The team has done a great job and we have to keep this up for Monza."
3rd Round 14: Côme Ledogar (Eifelland Racing): "I made a very good start and was easily first, but Javier was very fast in the straight and came by me easily. I didn't want to crash so let him pass. Robin was also very fast, but Jack was not so fast and I had a good fight with him. I am happy to be on the podium. When you are on pole you want to win but this is okay."
5th Round 14 and Top Rookie: Daniil Kvyat (RU/Eurointernational): "It was a nice race and I started quite well. Jack got in front of me, but then the next corner after the straight was quite crazy as my team-mate, Carlos, spun. Then I had a big battle with Hannes. This was really nice and correct and I really enjoyed it. We overtook each other several times and then I overtook him on the long straight and I pushed hard in the second sector. I was then doing the race by myself The best lap time wasn't as good as I would have liked, and this is what we need to improve for Monza as speed is important there."
