Nasr Dominates Spa While Lombard is Quickest Rookie.

Spa-Francorchamps, 28 August. Spa-Francorchamps proved as challenging as ever with a slightly damp track for the start of qualifying, but despite this Felipe Nasr (BR/Eurointernational), Michael Christensen (DK/Mu cke Motorsport) and Oliver Lombard (FR/Eurointernational) set a scorching pace to take the top three positions in the session.

A week on from the heat of Valencia, it was a much more comfortable 15 celsius air and 22 celcius track temperatures that greeted the drivers. After the first flying lap it was Jazeman Jaafar (MY/Eifelland Racing) who set the pace after being fastest in free practice. However, then Nasr and Christensen, who is celebrating his 19th birthday today, took over at the top of the time sheets, and it was after the chequered flag that the Brazilian put in the time that saw him grab his fifth pole of the season by just under a tenth of a second. He also secured pole for race two which brought his tally to six.

For Lombard this was the first time he had been in the top three and the fastest Rookie driver in qualifying. He also set his best time after the flag had dropped and beat second Rookie, Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Raicng), who was seventh overall and half a second behind him.

While this may be the longest track on the Formula BMW Europe calendar at 7.004 kilometres, the times were still very close with the top 15 covered by less than a second. The session was mainly incident free, but Asad Rahman (AE/Motaworld Racing Europe Ltd) didn't have a good first outing to his European season as he spun twice and the second time went off into the gravel trap.

1st - Rounds 13&14: Felipe Nasr (BR/Eurointernational): "I can tell you I am very happy. The car was really good. The team did a good job. This is a difficult track but you need to get the best lap possible as a driver and I think I did that. For me it is the perfect result. In some places it was a little bit wet at the start, but during the session it got better and we had a dry line so it was okay. This is my favourite track."

2nd - Rounds 13&14: Michael Christensen (DK/Mu cke Motorsport): "I didn't push on the last two laps as I knew there were yellow flags out, and I knew I would normally get a penalty for that if I was quicker in those sections. For me it was a good session, but I could only get one fast lap with the second set of tyres because of the yellow flags. I tried to do my best and I like this track."

3rd - Rounds 13, 5th Round 14 and top Rookie: Olivier Lombard (FR/Eurointernational): "You cannot imagine how happy I am as I have been waiting for this for a long time. I tried to do my best. The team brought me into the pits for new tyres quite late, so I had just two laps to do a good time and it was hard as I was under a bit of pressure. But finally I succeeded to put everything together and it was good. The track is very fast and it was not easy as at the start it was a bit wet."
