Rookies Top in First Formula BMW Official Test.

Munich. When the drivers entered for this year's Formula BMW Europe series took to the track together for the first time in Monza this week it was the Rookies who came out on top. Russia's Daniil Kyvat emerged as the fastest driver, with his Eurointernational team-mate, Carlos Sainz (ES), who is one of the Junior drivers, second. However, in the end it was the weather that beat them with day two of the first official test being cancelled due to snow.

On Tuesday (9th March) the weather at the Italian circuit was bitterly cold with the thermometer never getting above three degrees celsius. While the morning had been dry, at the end of the afternoon session it started to snow. This did not put the youngsters off, as it was a very successful day of running with no incidents.

Fifteen-year-old Kyvat was delighted to be quickest, but totally realistic about the task ahead of him when he said: "Now I have to keep working like this, as there is a very big difference between the karting I have been doing and driving a Formula BMW car. This is a real car and the best school for going from kartiing to single seaters. I was happy with the way the test went, even though it was pretty cold."

The drivers all made the most of the track time with Kyvat putting in 47 laps in the morning and 34 in the afternoon. His quickest lap was on his 21st in the afternoon, and prior to that he had set two times that would also have kept him at the top of the time sheets. Sainz did 40 laps in the morning and 45 in the afternoon, and also did another lap that would have assured him of his position of second on the leader board. In the morning it was 2009 Rookie Cup winner, Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing) who put in the best lap time, with Kyvat the fastest Rookie in fourth.

The next official test for the drivers is in Barcelona on 21/22 March, then they go to Silverstone on 6/7 April, Spa-Francorchamps on 12/13 April, Zandvoort on 20/21 April, Budapest on 25/26 May and Hockenheim on 1/2 June.

In past years, Formula BMW has proven to be the ideal springboard into the world of Formula One for many drivers. Last season alone, five former BMW drivers lined up in this series - and with great success. Nico Rosberg (DE), Timo Glock (DE), Adrian Sutil (DE) and Sebastien Buemi (CH) all scored World Championship points. Sebastian Vettel (DE) even celebrated four Grand Prix victories and finished the season as runner-up in the Drivers' Championship, behind Jenson Button (GB). Nicolas Hulkenberg (DE) and Bruno Senna (BR) will join the quintet in 2010 as regular F1 drivers. A number of other Formula BMW graduates can also hope to get a taste of Formula One as test and reserve drivers.
